Vacation in Oregon: Powell's bookstore

Comments

I miss Powell's. I'm a very fairweather reader, but even I have a hard time spending less than 2 hours in that place. I'm surprised you managed to get out of there with daylight and your bank account in tact!

I know, I'm quite proud of how GOOD I've been!

OK real reason for not buying more? I've got so much to read back home it's hard to justify buying MORE books. But, yeah I've now been to Powells three times and I bought 2 more books besides the two reported in the post. And I have one more day here without a plan so may as well browse Powell's again if I have nothing else to do, right? I LOVE used bookstores and there just isn't one near me in White Plains - I have to go to the library book sale area, and it's not huge, so Powell's is like nirvana in comparison.

I justify book sales by buying things I've already read and know are good, in order to build my "personal library." Nevermind that I don't re-read books very often (though my partner does). The benefit is lending them out to interested friends. The drawback is the nest of black widow spiders in the 8 cardboard boxes filled with books in my garage.

Just say no, kids.
*gasp*, black widow spiders?! That kills the high. I am also guilty of buying books I already own because it's a diff cover or because "this is such a good book, it doesn't deserve to be here, I have to save it!" - then I end up either mailing it to people I think will like it or putting it on Paperback Swap if there are people wishing for it.
[this is good]
Congrats on making the Culture page! I saw mention of Powells, and had to come see what you thought! I miss Powells, despite the fact that I am completely overwhelmed whenever I am there. Glad to hear it's still as good as always!

I didn't know I made the culture page! How cool! :D

Yep, Powell's is pretty great. I guess I have the Strand in NYC, though I think I like Powells' spec fiction section better.
